The UAE's National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) is understood to have been selected for the contract to expand offshore production facilities in the Abu Safah field, located in waters north of Dammam. Italy's Saipemand the US' J Ray McDermottwere competing for the work. The client is Saudi Aramco (MEED 19:7:02).
The scope of work includes the fabrication and installation of 18 production platforms and the laying of cabling and additional pipeline. The project is intended to raise production from the field to about 300,000 barrels a day (b/d) of oil. Abu Safah produces about 198,000 b/d of crude, of which 145,000 b/d is given to the Kingdom of Bahrain (see Special Report).
