Oil & Gas MEED Project of the Year 2012

27 March 2012

Intelligent design lies at the heart of MEED’s oil and gas projects of the year

WINNER GCC OIL & GAS PROJECT OF THE YEAR

Qatar

Pearl GTL

Entrant: Qatar Shell

Project owner: Qatar Petroleum and Shell

Project contractor: KBR, JGC and others

Engineering consultant: KBR, JGC and others

Architect: Shell

Description: At a development cost of $18bn-19bn, Pearl GTL is the world’s largest gas-to-liquids (GTL) project and the largest investment by any FTSE 100 company in a single project. At full capacity, Pearl GTL will produce 1.6 billion cubic feet a day of gas and convert it into 140,000 barrels a day (b/d) of high-quality GTL products and 120,000 b/d of natural gas liquids and ethane. Pearl GTL covers 250 hectares and took five years to build, from the initial site preparation work in 2007. At peak construction, 52,000 people worked on the project, which had a solid commitment to Qatarisation. The amount of water that Pearl GTL will produce will make it possible to run the plant without drawing on Qatar’s scarce natural freshwater resources or on seawater.

Bahrain

Bapco Lube Base Oil Plant Project

Entrant: Samsung Engineering

Project owner: Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco)

Project contractor: Samsung Engineering

Description: Bapco’s lube base oil plant (lBOP) has been built at the Sitra refinery, which processes 267,000 barrels a day of crude. The lBOP’s construction benefited the national economy by involving local subcontractors, which employed about 3,000 workers for the execution of the project, including 200 Bahrainis. The lBOP is one of the largest in the world and its new technology will improve the competitive advantage of Bahrain’s refining industry, giving it the ability to become a world leader in the production of high-quality lube base oils. A healthy channel of communication between Bapco’s project management team and Samsung Engineering’s project team led to the successful completion of the project.

Oman

Nimr C Full Field Water Injection Project

Entrant: Al-Hassan Engineering Company

Project owner: Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)

Project contractor: Al-Hassan Engineering

Engineering consultant: Mott MacDonald

Description: Nimr C is part of the Nimr cluster of oil fields and is located about 30 kilometres northeast of the Nimr production station. The field was discovered in 1980 and produced its first barrel of oil in 1987. The production is dominated by edgewater drive and by pressure depletion from a combination of 40 vertical and 28 horizontal wells. By 2013, the injection project will increase the production of the Nimr C field from 600 cubic metres a day (cm/d) to a peak of 2,000 cm/d by injecting up to 40,000 cm/d of water. It will benefit the national economy by helping to meet increased domestic energy consumption as well as increasing oil exports. The project implementation has helped local contractors grow. During the peak of the project, 400 Omani nationals were employed.

UAE

Taweelah-Fujairah Pipeline Project

Entrant: Dolphin Energy

Project owner: Dolphin Energy

Project contractor: Stroytransgaz, WorleyParsons (as subcontractor)

Engineering consultant: ILF

Description: Dolphin Energy’s Taweelah-Fujairah Pipeline Project (TFP) is now delivering essential volumes of natural gas to Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Company’s power stations on the east coast of the UAE. With a capacity of 1.6 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas, TFP drives industrial development and economic diversification, and supports energy security in the UAE. The 244-kilometre pipeline, which required three years of planning, runs through harsh desert and mountain terrain. It is an example of innovative design, engineering and construction completed in accordance with Dolphin Energy’s strict quality, health, safety and environmental standards.
