The Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has invited companies to submit proposals for a contract to conduct a wind resource assessment campaign.
Interested firms have until 29 October to collect documents, and 29 November to submit proposals, for the wind resource assessment contract. The wind resource assessment will include providing and installing equipment/sensors and data validation services to facilitate planning for the future development of wind power in the sultanate.
The only wind project currently planned in Oman is a 50MW project in the Dhofar area of Oman, which is being overseen by the Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco).
MEED reported in August that lead developer the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) had awarded the main construction contract for the planned 50MW wind project to a consortium of the US’ GE and Spain’s TSK.
The international joint venture will provide and install the components for the first large-scale wind project in the GCC, which will be located in the Dhofar governorate in the southern part of the sultanate. The wind farm will consist of 13 wind turbines, which will be provided by GE.
Masdar signed an agreement with the Rural Areas Electricity Company of Oman (RAECO) to develop the 50MW wind project in 2014.
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development will be providing financing for the wind project.
