Piling package awarded on Burj Dubai

A team of Germany's Bauer and the local Middle East Foundationshas been awarded the pilings package for the landmark Burj Dubai project.

Estimated to be worth AED 60 million ($16 million), the 190-day contract calls for the excavation of up to 50 metres and the driving of a total of 850 1.5-metre-diameter piles. Two hundred piles are for the tower, while the remaining 650 piles will support the proposed podium (MEED 5:12:03).

The Burj Dubai development calls for the construction of a landmark tower at least 800 metres high, a podium, aquatic features, pedestrian boulevards and car parks. The complex will be built over an area of 14 million square feet near the second interchange on Sheikh Zayed highway.

The tower will house a shopping mall in the basement, a five-star hotel, retail outlets and residential and commercial units. The construction period will be 36-42 months. The project will be carried out in several specialist packages.

The US' Skidmore Owings & Merrillis the architectural design consultant; the project manager is Turner International,also of the US. The client is the local property developer Emaar Properties.
