About six contractors have been invited to submit prequalifications by late January to construct a new shipbuilding facility for Dubai Drydocks. The project is the final part of the estimated $200 million expansion of the docks. The new facility, known as Safina, will comprise offshore and onshore elements and will enable the shipyard to build 60-metre-wide vessels with a depth of 30 metres.
The scope of the offshore works includes dredging, a concrete platform with associated pipework and a launching facility. Onshore, the works cover construction of workshops, a ground assembly area and a 55-metre-high, 300-tonne crane. The tender is expected to be issued by February with an award expected by May. Work is scheduled to take about eight months. Work is already close to completion on extending the dock's life by 40 years, building an offshore floating deck and increasing accommodation capacity by 2,000.
