Prince Alwaleed buys own Superjumbo

12 November 2007
Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the Saudi billionaire, is to become the world’s first private owner of an Airbus A380 Superjumbo.

Prince Alwaleed, owner of Kingdom Holdings, the largest individual investor in Citigroup, and the world’s 13th richest-man was unveiled as the first VIP owner of a so-called ‘flying palace’ on 12 November, the second day of the Dubai Airshow.

The list price for a commercial A380 is $320 million, though the cost to the prince is unknown.

“The cost can vary dramatically according to the type of interior desired by the customer,” says an Airbus official.

The double-decker flying palace can house a number of bedrooms, a steam bath and gym, as well as staff quarters. The plane’s interior will be designed and fitted by Germany’s Luftahnsa Technik.

Airbus says it is currently in discussions with another potential private buyer for an A380, also from the Middle East.
