Prince Khalid bin Bandar

Position: Governor, Riyadh

Biography: Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz al-Saud was appointed governor of Riyadh in February, following the death of Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz al-Saud.

His appointment was the latest in a series of promotions of the grandsons of King Abdulaziz. The role puts him in charge of one of the kingdom’s strategically important provinces, including the capital city. It also carries the rank of minister. Prince Khalid graduated from the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and has had military training in the US. He has had a long career in the Saudi military, including as commander of the Saudi Royal Land Forces.

Riyadh is considered one of the most important governor roles in Saudi Arabia, alongside the Eastern Province, which is home to the kingdom’s oil industry. Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, son of King Abdullah, was appointed deputy governor of Riyadh at the same time.
