Prequalified bidders for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract on the Qarn Alam steam project have been invited to carry out a front-end engineering and design (FEED) verification and optimisation study. The move follows changes to the project design by the client, Petroleum Development Oman.
The four prequalifiers are Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas (TR), Italy's Saipem, Canada's SNC Lavalin and UAE-based Petrofac International with the local Galfar Engineering & Contracting. The EPC contract had originally been due to be tendered in May but is now likely to be released later in the year. Calgary-based MEG WorleyParsons carried out the original FEED study. The estimated $250 million-300 million enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project calls for the use of steam-assisted gas-oil gravity drainage to thin viscous oil and ease extraction. The scope of works includes the installation of steam generators, a raw water supply system, a water filtration and treatment plant, oil and gas processing, deoiling and gas compression facilities and offplot pipelines, headlines and flowlines (MEED 5:8:05).
