Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has signed infrastructure construction contracts totalling QR5.4bn ($1.48bn).

The largest project awarded was the design, build, operation and maintenance of Al-Dhakhira Sewage Treatment Works (STW), to a joint venture of South Korean Hyundai Rotem and Aqualia Mace (Spain/UAE), for over QR1.5bn.

The STW will have a capacity of 56,200 cubic meters per day and treat effluents generated from the Al-Khor and Al-Dhakhira areas. The project also includes the modification of the existing pumping station in Al-Khor, the construction of a sewage pumping station to pump sewage form the existing treating facility in Al-Dhakhira and Al-Khor to the new Sewage Treatment Facility in Al-Dhakhira and operation and maintenance of the plant is for 10 years.

Doha West STW will be expanded from 104,500 c m/day to 280,000 c m/day by a joint venture of French company Degremont and Japanese Marubeni Corporation that secured the QR797m contract.

The largest road building contract awarded was to local Qatar Building Company for the development of the existing 28.7 kilometre Al-Shahhaniyah – Al-Otouriyah - Al-Jemailiya road. The QR669 project will involve the construction of a two-lane road in each direction, with the possibility of adding a third lane in each direction in the future, as well as four main intersections. The project also includes pedestrian paths and cycleways along the side of the road.

The road projects are part of Ashghal’s Local Roads and Drainage Programme worth QR50bn and Expressway Programme, which includes QR16bn of projects so far. US firms Parsons Brinckerhoff and KBR are the respective programme managers.

Contractors are for contracts to be awarded on Ashghal’s QR10bn Inner Doha Resewerage Scheme (IDRIS) in early 2015.
