Qatar considers Olympic bid

Sporting facilities would already be in place

Qatar could bid for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, according to Thani al-Kuwari, a member of the country’s Olympic committee, speaking to AFP.

If Qatar does bid it would be the third time Doha has competed to host the event.

Qatar bid for the 2020 Olympics, but did not make the final shortlist. It proposed holding the games in October.

“The vision and the target is to host one of the Olympics, one day,” al Kuwari told AFP. “All the facilities are going to be ready for everything, especially after 2022, the facilities almost 99 per cent are ready. Also, the logistics for those facilities are completed, so why not?”

Qatar has invested heavily in infrastructure and sports facilities for the 2022 Fifa World Cup. The World Cup is also stimulating private sector investment in real estate and hospitality.

Qatar’s GDP growth has remained over 4 per cent in the last five years thanks to the investment drive.

It has also hosted the Handball Men’s World Championships in 2015 and has been awarded the 2019 World Athletics Championship.
