Aim is to appoint a main contractor by the beginning of the third quarter of this year
Qatar is considering using a public private partnership (PPP) model for one of the proposed World Cup stadiums, according to Mohammed Al-Mulla, project manager at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacys (SCDL) competition venues department
We are hoping that for the last of the announced stadiums yet to be awarded [Ras Abu Abood stadium] to be able to deliver it using the private sector. Maybe through a PPP model, Al-Mulla told MEED in Doha on 28 February.
Al-Mulla also told MEED that he is hoping to a appoint a main contractor for the project by the beginning of the third quarter of this year. Al-Mulla did not rule out using a contractor financing model for the stadium.
It is understood that the SCDL received bids from contractors for the Ras Abu Abood stadium earlier this year despite the authorities now looking to develop the project using the private sector.
The Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, which is also known as the Fourth Precinct, will be developed near to Hamad International airport in the Ras Abu Aboud area. The consultant is US-based Populous while the project manager is Turner International.
Earlier this month the SCDL awarded the contract to build the $342.5m stadium at Al-Thumama to a joint venture of the local Al-Jaber Engineering and Turkeys Tekfen Construction.
The authorities also recently said that the final number of stadiums will be confirmed in May this year. There are currently eight stadiums confirmed by SCDL.
