Qatar electricity transmission projects
Entrant: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa)
Project owner: Kahramaa
Project contractors: Siemens consortium, Alstom, Hyosung, ABB consortium, National Contracting Company, Saudi Cables, Mitsubishi Corporation
Engineering consultant: Energoprojekt-Entel
Description: Qatar’s networks for distributing power to residential, commercial and industrial schemes need improving, particularly as the country develops projects in preparation for hosting the 2022 football World Cup. To address this issue, Kahramaa undertook a major expansion of the Qatar Transmission System, which included the construction of 29 substations and the installation of 300 kilometres of cables. One of the challenges involved in this scheme was maintaining power supply while work was being undertaken.
Several substations also had to be erected in parallel within a short period of time. A number of substations were also built as well as upgraded to help meet the growing demand for electricity in Al-Rayyan village. The substations are equipped with ABB’s latest gas-insulated switchgear technology, which provides an extremely compact footprint and is suited for urban applications.
