Lusail stadium will seat 80,000 football fans

Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy has invited contractors to bid by 1 August for the deal to build the World Cup football stadium at Lusail.

The 80,000-seat stadium will be used for the final match of football’s Fifa 2022 World Cup.

The companies invited to bid for the construction deal are:

The tender documents say the maximum price for the tender is QR2.8bn ($769m). Construction work is scheduled to start in December.

US-based Turner International Middle East is the project management consultant.

In 2015, the UK’s Foster+Partners was appointed to design the stadium. Foster+Partners is working with US architect Populous and UK-based engineering consultancy Arup.

An award is expected soon for the contract to build the Al-Rayyan stadium. A joint venture of India’s Larsen & Toubro and the local Al-Balagh Trading & Contracting is the frontrunner for the contract, which involves building a 45,000-seat stadium that will host group matches during the World Cup. It is expected to cost about QR1.3bn to complete.

The concept design was prepared by Germany’s Albert Speer & Partner (AS&P). The consultant is Denmark’s Ramboll and US-based Aecom is the project manager. Qatar Foundation is tendering the contract to build the stadium, which will be located in Education City.

Last year, a joint venture of the local Midmac Contracting Company and Austria’s Porr won the contract to build the Al-Wakrah stadium.

Also last year, Qatar awarded the first main construction contract for one of the new stadiums it plans to build for the World Cup. A joint venture of Italy’s Salini Impregilo and Cimolai, and the local Galfar Engineering was awarded a €770m ($850m) contract by the local Aspire Zone to build the Al-Bayt stadium in Al-Khor.

In April 2014, Qatar awarded the first World Cup stadium construction contract to a joint venture of Belgium’s Six Construct and the local Midmac Contracting Company. The estimated $300m contract involves upgrading the existing Khalifa Stadium and increasing the seating capacity of the stadium to 60,000, from the current 45,000.
