Qatar to appoint project manager for Lusail World Cup stadium

13 October 2013

Consultant will manage the construction of largest stadium planned for the event

The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee is close to appointing a project manager for the Lusail Iconic stadium.

Sources close to the project say that an award could be made by the end of October.

With a planned capacity of more than 86,000 people it is the largest stadium that will be built for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

In May 2013, the supreme committee appointed the local office of KEO International Consultants as the project manager and US-based Aecom as the design consultant for Al-Wakrah stadium project.

That stadium will have the capacity to seat 45,000 people during the World Cup. The top-tiers of the stadium will be modular and following the tournament, the capacity of the stadium will be reduced to 20,000, with 25,000 seats removed. The plans is for these seats to be donated and re-constructed in developing countries.

US-based CH2M Hill was appointed as programme manager for the delivery of stadiums and sporting facilities for the 2022 World Cup in February 2012.

CH2M Hill has direct responsibility for the construction of stadium and sporting facilities, and will have a monitoring and supervision role for non-sporting facilities, such as the Fifa headquarters and infrastructure schemes.
