Qatar to host 2011 Asian Cup football competition

30 July 2007

Qatar will host the Asian Cup football tournament in 2011, the Asian Football Confederation announced on 29 July.

The Gulf country will join Iran as the only nations to have hosted the competition twice. Qualifying teams from the Asian Football Confederation’s four divisions will compete in the tournament, which is expected to take place in January 2011.

Football’s governing body the International Federation of Association Football only allows international tournaments to take place two times during the year to avoid clashes with domestic competitions.

AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam said: ‘The other window is July, but that is the hot season in Qatar so it cannot be held at that time of year. At the moment the indications are that this competition should be organised in January.’

In a surprise result, Iraq won the tournament this year beating Saudi Arabia, in the Jakarta-based final on 29 July.
