QF mulls Education City accommodation bids

07 August 2004
An award is expected by late August for the estimated $170 million-180 million project to build a major accommodation complex at Education City. The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development (QF) received bids from at least four groups in mid-July for the contract, which will be the first of a raft of new awards on the 10 million-square-metre development (MEED 25:6:04).

Bidders for the residential accommodation package include: a local joint venture of Contracoand Midmac Contracting; Darwish Engineering, also local, with US-based Contrack International; the local Tadmur Contracting, with Austria's Strabag; and the local Teyseer Contracting Company, with Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company.

The fast-track project, due to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2005, calls for the construction of about 600 residential units over a total built-up area of 150,000 square metres.

Further contracts are due to be tendered on Education City, including the convention centre package, for which prequalification is nearing completion.

The project manager on the development is the local office of KEO International Consultants.
