Qurei to promote two-step peace plan

30 October 2003
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei (Abu Ala) announced on 29 October that he wishes to pursue a two-step peace plan that will firstly aim to set up a truce with Palestinian groups, and then attempt to involve the Israelis. 'I don't have American and Israeli assurances. I want Palestinian assurances, and if I get these Palestinian assurances, then there will be no problem,' Qurei said.

Qurei's news was shortly followed by remarks from Israeli army's chief of staff condemning present hard-line policies against the Palestinians, which were working against the 'strategic interest' of the state. Comments attributed to Moshe Yaalon in the local press say that present government policies 'increase hatred for Israel and strengthen the terrorist organisations' (MEED 28:10:03).
