Saudi Electricity Company is expanding its existing power plants to address growth in Saudi Arabia’s electricity consumption

Key Facts

Overview

Saudi Electricity Company is expanding its existing power plants to address the anticipated 5.5 per cent annual growth in Saudi Arabia’s electricity consumption. SEC had originally planned to tender the project as a 1,200MW main package with a second optional 1,200MW package. However, the plant will now have a capacity of 2,800MW.

The power plant will be oil-fired using heavy fuel oil with provision for future conversion to gas. The thermal plant will operate on a conventional reheat Rankine cycle. The electrical output will be exported to the grid through a new 380kV gas insulated substation (GIS).

Project scope includes:

  • Conventional oil-fired thermal generating units (4 x 700MW)
  • Balance of plant
  • Marine works for the intake and discharge
  • Steam turbines (400MW)
  • Flue gas desulphurisation unit
  • Boilers
  • Condensers
  • Transformers
  • Generators
  • Civil works
  • Pipeline
  • Substation
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
