Sag Sohar starts production at aluminium processing plant

18 March 2008
Oman-based Sag Sohar has started production at its 30,000 tonnes-a-year (t/y) aluminium processing plant in the Sohar Industrial Estate.

Sag Sohar will produce raw ingots, extrusion billet, forging billet and casting alloys. Other aluminium projects planned for the area include a steel rolling mill and an aluminium rod plant.

In early 2007, the company won a contract to produce power rails for the Qatalum aluminium smelter being developed at Qatar’s Mesaieed industrial area.

The project is located in the downstream aluminium area next to Sohar Aluminium’s smelting complex. Sohar Aluminium is scheduled to start primary aluminium production in mid-2008, and has allocated 210,000 t/y of its 350,000 t/y output to the local downstream industry.

Sag is a joint venture between Austria's Salzburger Aluminium and Takamul Investments, the investment arm of the state-owned Oman Oil Company.

The Sohar Industrial Estate is one of seven industrial areas managed by Oman’s Public Establishment for Industrial Estates. The zone is close to the port and industrial area being developed by Sohar Industrial Port Company.
