Salalah methanol uncovered

The UK's GTL Resourcesis in negotiations with Oman Oil Company (OOC)to build a methanol plant in Salalah. The scale of the proposed plant is in the region of 3,000-5,000 tonnes a day (t/d) of methanol. Total project costs are estimated at about $350 million-400 million.

The scheme is the second methanol venture planned in the sultanate. Oman Methanol Company- a joint-venture between Oman Methanol Holding Company, part of the local Omzest Group, Methanol Holding Trinidadand Germany's Ferrostaal - is finalising its plans to build a 2,500-t/d methanol plant in Sohar.

OOC had planned to invest in the Sohar plant but pulled out following the major shareholders' decision to reduce the scale of the facility (MEED 2:1:04).
