Sama launches Lagoons

24 April 2006

Sama Dubai, formerly known as Dubai International Properties, has formally launched its Lagoons project. Located on the banks of Dubai creek in the Ras al-Khor/Nad al-Hammar area, the 7 million-square-metre project will have seven islands, comprising residential units, commercial towers, five-star hotels and shopping malls. Cultural elements will include an opera house, a planetarium, a museum, an art centre and a theatre. The project was formerly known as the Seven Pearls.

The local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty is working on the estimated AED 70 million ($19 million) quay wall package for the central island at the heart of the development. The local/Turkish joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises and STFA Soil Group is carrying out the first of four piling packages, which involves foundations work for three of the project's 11 road bridges.

The local Ghantoot Transport & General Contracting is carrying out site preparation works; the UK's Halcrow is the consultant; US-based Hill International is the project manager (MEED 10:2:06).
