South Korea’s Samsung C&T has indicated in a stock market filing that its contracted work on UAE-based Emirates Aluminium’s (Emal’s) smelter expansion has overrun.

The company was awarded the $587m engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a combined-cycle power plant in 2011 and was due to finish the work on 1 June 2014.

“Samsung C&T is progressing with commissioning in accordance with Emal’s schedule and negotiating with Emal regarding the extension of [the] construction period,” the company said.

Emal invested $4.5m to expand its Abu Dhabi smelter to a capacity of 1.4 million tonnes a year (t/y) of primary aluminium.
