Kuwait acting oil minister says production will resume gradually at Divided Zone field
Kuwait has agreed with Saudi Arabia to restart oil production at the jointly held Khafji field, according to a report citing Kuwaits acting oil minister Anas al-Saleh.
The offshore field, located in the Divided Zone between the two countries, was taken offline in October 2014.
Al-Saleh said the restart of production would be small and gradual, UK news agency Reuters reported from a conference in Kuwait City.
The Khafji field is operated by Al-Khafji Joint Operations Company, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company. Production at the field was more than 300,000 barrels a day (b/d) before it was shut down.
At the time, Saudi Arabia officially said Khafji was shut down for environmental reasons. However, industry sources told MEED the field was shut due to an ongoing dispute over land use in the Divided Zone.
In the first half of 2015, production at Wafra, another field in the Divided Zone, was also stopped.
