Six individuals leading the development of downstream petrochemicals schemes in the kingdom: Richard Crosby, Paul Aegerter, Gasem al-Maimani, Saleh al-Nazha, Faysal al-Rasheed and Ziad al-Labban

Richard Crosby

Position: General manager, Middle East & Africa, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) Innovative Plastics

Biography: Richard Crosby is responsible for Sabic subsidiary Innovative Plastic’s (IP) operations in Saudi Arabia, in particular its speciality plastics production and downstream conversion. His remit includes managing IP’s interests in the Saudi Kayan polycarbonate plant, as well as overseeing opportunities for expanding its engineered thermoplastics business. He also provides strategic advice on asset management in Saudi Arabia. Crosby joined Sabic in 1988 as an analytical chemist. Since then he has been employed in several roles, including technology manager for specialist resins and global crystalline products business manager. His most recent role between 2009 and 2010 was as general manager of global marketing and technology performance. Crosby has a doctorate in chemistry from Texas A&M University in the US.

Paul Aegerter

Position: Project director, nylon & conversion projects, Chevron Phillips Petrochemical Conversion Company

Biography: Paul Aegerter leads a joint venture between the Saudi Industrial Investment Group and the US’ Arabian Chevron Phillips Petrochemical Company, which is developing a complex at Jubail. It will produce speciality plastics, which will be converted into products for the automotive, medical and electrical goods industries. Aegerter started working for Phillips Petroleum Company in 1980 in a research and development role. Since then, he has worked in key positions, including chairman of the board for Chevron Phillips Chemical Puerto Rico Core and general manager for worldwide aromatics between 2005 and 2006. Prior to moving to Saudi Arabia in 2009, he worked as general manager research and technology for Chevron Phillips Chemical Company. Aegerter has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering.

Gasem al-Maimani

Position: Vice-president, plastics & packaging, National Industrial Clusters Development Programme (NICDP)

Biography: Gasem al-Maimani joined Sabic in 1989 as a project engineer. He has held key positions at Sabic, which has allowed him to become a central figure in the development of the kingdom’s plastics and packaging sector, promoting clusters in Jubail and other industrial areas. Between 2004 and 2009, Al-Maimani worked as support general manager for Sabic’s polymers business. In this role, he was responsible for executing strategy for polymers megaprojects. Al-Maimani has been chairman of Sabic Polymers in Turkey, as well as a board member of Sabic affiliates Yanpet and Kemya. He has also been a board member for Iran’s Laleh Petrochemical Company. In 2010-11, he was made president of the local Al-Watania Plastics Company. Al-Maimani has a degree in mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals.

Saleh al-Nazha

Position: President and chief operating officer (COO), National Industrialisation Company (Tasnee)

Biography: As president and COO of Tasnee, Salah al-Nazha leads a number of subsidiaries in upstream polyolefins production, as well as downstream plastics converters. Tasnee’s broad value chain gives Al-Nazha a unique insight into the relationship between the kingdom’s base chemicals producers and downstream conversion industries. He is president and managing director of Tasnee affiliates Saudi Polyolefins Company and Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company, as well as being chairman of Saudi Acrylic Monomers Company, a joint venture with the US’ Dow Chemical. Prior to joining Tasnee, Al-Nazha worked for Sabic for 17 years. Past positions include director of operations and maintenance at Eastern Petrochemical Company. Al-Nazha graduated as a chemical engineer from the King Saud University in Riyadh.

Faysal al-Rasheed

Position: Director of investment & industrial clusters, Royal Commission of Jubail & Yanbu

Biography: In his current role at the Royal Commission of Jubail & Yanbu, Faysal al-Rasheed is responsible for ensuring Saudi Arabia has the infrastructure in place to offer competitive terms to plastics converters looking to set up plants. Based in Riyadh, Al-Rasheed’s responsibilities includes masterplanning of infrastructure and petrochemical clusters, as well as project management of initiatives aimed at increasing the number of converters in the kingdom. He is also head of strategic stakeholders for the Ras Al-Khair Industrial City. Al-Rasheed has worked at the Royal Commission of Jubail & Yanbu for 20 years in various roles, including infrastructure planning, project management and engineering. Al-Rasheed has a master’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Arizona in the US. He is also a consultant engineer at the Saudi Council of Engineers.

Ziad al-Labban

Position: President and chief executive officer (CEO), PetroRabigh

Biography: Ziad al-Labban assumed his current role after the completion of the PetroRabigh integrated refinery and petrochemicals plant in 2009. He is also responsible for ensuring the success of the adjacent Rabigh Conversion Industrial Park (RCIP), where output from PetroRabigh can be transferred to smaller plants for conversion into different products. Al-Labban is a Saudi Aramco veteran, having joined the firm in 1982 after graduating in electrical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals. He held various roles at Aramco, including vice-president of corporate planning for Petron Corporation in the Philippines and chairman of its insurance subsidiary, Ovincor. Prior to his current role, he was president and CEO of Aramco subsidiary Saudi Refining Incorporated in the US. Al-Labban has a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from the US’ Stanford University.
