Saudi Arabia to complete Ras-al Khair desalination plant in 2016

10 December 2015

Desalination plant will be the largest operational hybrid desalination plant in the world

The world’s largest hybrid desalination plant is set to be fully operational by the end of 2016, MEED’s Saudi Mega Projects conference has been told.

Speaking at the event in Riyadh on 10 December, Saleh al-Sudais, director general for studies and design, SWCC said that the project was on schedule to be fully completed by the end of 2016.

First water from the Ras al-Khair plant, which has a power generation component of 2,400MW, was supplied to the grid in 2014.

SWCC is also planning to oversee the construction of the planned 400,000 cubic-metre-a-day (cm/d) Jeddah 4 desalination plant. The desalination body issued tender documents in October, and is seeking to start construction work in the first quarter of 2016.

In December 2014, MEED reported that the US’ Black & Veatch was awarded the deal to provide engineering and design consultancy services on the Jeddah 4 desalination project.

SWCC is planning to release tender documents for the planned 600,000 cm/d Rabigh phase 3 desalination plant by early February 2016.
