Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) is the frontrunner for the two major construction contracts on the expansion of King Abdulaziz International airport in Jeddah.

“SBG is waiting for the NTP [notice to proceed]. It [succeeded] for the commercial and technical proposals. It is waiting for a final decision from the King Abdulaziz [airport] management,” says a source close to the project.

The first contract involves building a 600,000 square-metre passenger terminal that will be able to handle 30 million passengers each year. The second contract covers infrastructure and involves designing and building runways, tunnels, landscaping and a light rail system.

Contractors submit their bids for the two deals in April. SBG was the lowest bidder for the terminal and infrastructure contracts as it submitted a price of SR11.3bn ($3bn) and SR13.9bn respectively.

For the terminal, the other bidders included a joint venture of Saudi Oger and South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East) at SR14.4bn; the local Almabani General Contractors Company at SR18.4bn; a consortium of Turkey’s TAV, Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), the local El-Seif Engineering & Contracting and the local Al-Rajhi Group at SR19.1bn.

For the infrastructure contract, the other bidders were Almabani at SR16.8bn, TAV/CCC/El-Seif/Al-Rajhi at SR18.9bn; Oger/Murray & Roberts at SR19.6bn; and China Harbour Engineering Company at SR22bn.

Lebanon’s Dar al-Handasah is the consultant on the project.

Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in its airports. The other major airport project underway in the kingdom is the expansion of Medina airport. The $1.5bn first phase of the airport involves the construction of a new passenger terminal and the renovation of the existing runway.  Contractors have until 15 December to submit their bids (MEED 19:8:10).

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Civil Aviation (Gaca) plans to revamp Medina airport to increase its passenger handling capacity to 14 million people a year. The airport currently handles about 3.5 million passengers a year.

Gaca was unavailable to comment on the status of the Jeddah airport contracts.
