Saudi desalination firm to double water output by 2015

19 March 2012

Saudi utility Saline Water Conversion Corp (SWCC) has unveiled plans to nearly double energy-intensive desalinated water production to almost 6 million cubic metres per day by the end of 2015, Reuters has reported. The state-run firm now produces 3.3 million cubic metres per day of desalinated water, supplying more than half of Saudi Arabia's needs, said SWCC governor, Abdulrahman Mohammed al-Ibrahim. Water consumption in the kingdom is already almost double the per capita global average and increasing at an ever faster rate with the rapid expansion of population and industrial development.
