The US' GE has signed a contract for almost $1bn to supply Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) with more than 30 gas turbines for its PP10 power plant to be built in Riyadh.

The turbines will be shipped to the engineering, procurement and construction contractor, the local Arabian Bemco Contracting Company.

The first turbines, with a total capacity of 1,000MW, will come on line in the first half of 2010, with the rest to follow in 2011. When completed, PP10 will have capacity of 2,000MW of power.

The PP10 deal, which was booked in December 2008, brings the value of GE's orders from SEC over the last three years to $2.5bn. Over the last 15 years the company has received commitments for 115 turbines for SEC.
