The UK-based firm will now conduct a design audit and will supervise the main contractor

The UK’s Scott Wilson has won the consultancy contract for stage two of the first phase of Bubiyan port in Kuwait.

Kuwait’s Public Works Ministry initially invited seven consultants to bid for the second stage of the first phase in April. The other bidders included Denmark’s Ramboll Group, US-based Aecom, Australia’s WorleyParsons, US-based Moffatt & Nichol, UK-based Mouchel and UK’s Halcrow.

Scott Wilson will now conduct a design audit, as well as providing construction supervision services. This involves supervising the main contractor which is a consortium comprising South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company and the local Mohammed Abdulmohsin al-Kharafi & Sons.

The consortium won the KD328m ($1.1bn) deal to carry out the marine engineering works on the planned port on Bubiyan island in early June (MEED 3:6:10).

The design and build contract involves the construction of a container terminal, four berths and a 1,300-metre-long quay wall, as well as port buildings and utilities, digging and soil improvement work and site levelling.

The Public Works Ministry is the client on the project.

Bubiyan port was initially scheduled to open in 2010, however after three years of slow progress it is significantly behind schedule. Construction is now expected to start in the first quarter of 2011.

The port is part of the government’s plan to spend $10.8bn on infrastructure development by 2013.
