Senior Iraqi judge assassinated

A senior judge in the northern city of Mosul was assassinated on 23 December, local police said. Yusef Khorshid, was shot at least six times by three men who fled from the scene. The attack occurred in the city's Muthanna district. 'He was killed last night,' said local police spokesman Ali Mohammed. 'He was shot six times from behind in the back. He died immediately.' Khorshid was among the most senior investigative judges in the Mosul area.

Violence aimed at US soldiers, Iraqis co-operating with the coalition and former Baath Part officials in and around Mosul has escalated in recent months. Two prominent judges, both of who had been carrying out investigations into several members of the former regime, were shot and killed on 4 and 5 November in central Mosul (MEED 4:11:03).
