Sharon plans to move settlements

10 December 2003
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on 9 December told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee that he was planning a number of measures that could lead to some settlements being moved or dismantled. 'It is possible that Israel will take unilateral steps that include moving some settlements,' Sharon said. The decision to move a number of outposts was in the national interest, he said. 'We will not wait, and we may take unilateral measures, including the evacuation of commodities for the sake of Israel's security,' he told committee members.

Sharon emphasised that he was also planning a full 'overhaul' of national security, which would take into account a final and total failure of the internationally-sponsored peace roadmap. 'I am considering the possibility of an overall unilateral security move that will provide a better solution for Israel's security problems and preventing terror,' he said.
