Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani
Position: Prime minister and interior minister
Biography: Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani has been appointed as Qatar’s new prime minister and interior minister, replacing Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani. Sheikh Abdullah will be closely watched for signs of change in Qatar’s policy towards the Mursi government in Egypt, the Hamas government in Gaza and the conflict in Syria.
Sheikh Abdullah formerly served in the Qatari cabinet as minister of state for interior affairs. He had a primary focus on internal security, in particular preparing Qatar’s communications networks for the 2006 Asian games in Doha and the 2022 football World Cup.
He now takes on the full senior role of interior minister along with his prime ministerial duties. Sheikh Abdullah has a degree in police science from Durham Military College in the UK, and a degree in law from Beirut Arab University.
