Sheraton award awaited

The local/Kuwaiti Gulf Egypt for Hotels & Tourismis expected to announce on 8 December the successful bidder for the electro-mechanical works subcontract on the estimated $50 million-55 million expansion of the Sheraton Heliopolis in Cairo. The four groups of international contractors bidding for the main construction contract will then be asked to incorporate this package into their financial proposals (MEED 29:8:03).

The bidders for the subcontract are Germany's Siemens, Europe's ABBand the local Nile Aster International, which was responsible for electro-mechanical works on the Conrad hotel in the capital. The bidders for the main contract, which is due to be awarded on 21 January, are Besixof Belgium, Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC), Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P- Overseas)and Lebanon's Arabian Construction Companywith Interbetonof the Netherlands.

Scheduled for completion in 2004, the 285-room facility will be located on the same site as the Sheraton Heliopolis but operated under the Westin brand by Sheraton parent company Starwood Hotels & Resortsof the US. The UK office of Wimberly Allison Tong& Goohas drawn up designs for the hotel, and Toronto-based Yollesis structural engineer for the project.
