The two firms will develop business opportunities in additive manufacturing

Germany’s Siemens has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi government-owned Mubadala Development Company to develop business opportunities in 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, in the Middle East and North Africa region.

“With a growing manufacturing sector in the UAE and the wider region, 3D printing is a disruptive technology that is set to have a significant impact on the industry,” says Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO of Siemens in the Middle East and the UAE. “The UAE has recognised the potential of 3D printing [in areas ranging] from industry to infrastructure, and Siemens looks forward to providing its digital expertise in the area.”

Siemens manufactures spare parts, including for industrial gas turbines and rail vehicles, using 3D printing in Germany.

The firm says additive manufacturing technology allows design improvement and rapid manufacturing of parts, enabling quick upgrades to existing assets. Advantages also include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using fewer resources in the production process, cutting development time and faster repairs.
