Siemens bids low for Aswan rehab

The joint venture of Germany's Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generationand Russia's Electrosilais frontrunner to win the contract to rehabilitate the hydroelectric turbine generators at the Aswan high dam, following the opening of commercial bids in early June. The venture's base bid of£E 334 million ($55.8 million) is 13 per cent cheaper than the next lowest offer, submitted by a Japanese group of Toshiba Corporationwith Nissho Iwai. The Siemens/Electrosila team also submitted an alternative bid of£E 302 million ($50.5 million - MEED 21:3:03).

The only other bidder for the contract, which is being handled by the Hydroelectric Power Generating Company, is France's Alstom Power. The five-year contract is expected to be awarded by August.

Germany's Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau is providing the equivalent of $76 million in finance for the project, which involves rehabilitating the 12 turbine generators, each with capacity of 175 MW, built by Russian companies in the 1960s. The consultant for the rehabilitation is a Swedish team of Swecoand Swedpower(MEED 6:9:02).
