Germany’s Siemens says it is ready to install 11GW of power capacity in Iraq over a period of four years, under a programme which will boost the country’s installed generation capacity by almost 50 per cent.
The plans were revealed following a meeting between Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Siemens CEO Joe Kaser in Baghdad on 23 September. The 11GW of capacity is part of a strategic road map that Siemens has drawn up to rebuild Iraq’s power sector. The road map consists of a series of short, medium and long-term plans designed to support the country’s reconstruction programme.
In addition to the launch of the 11GW generation programme, Kaser revealed that Siemens would be funding a "School of the Future", donating a smart health clinic, providing a $60m software grant for Iraqi universities, and a pledge to provide vocational education training for more than 1,000 Iraqi citizens.
