German firm will provide steam turbines for combined-cycle conversion

Germany’s Siemens has been awarded a contract to increase the capacity of the Rumaila power plant in Iraq by 700MW.

Siemens will supply steam turbines to convert the existing 1,500MW power plant into a combined-cycle configured facility. The original plant was commissioned in 2013.

The German firm was awarded the contract by China’s Sinohydro, which is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the expansion. The plant is being developed by Erbil-based KAR group. The expansion works are due to be completed by 2020.
