The Royal Commission for Jubail & Yanbu (RCJ&Y) has awarded an estimated SR 16 million ($4.3 million) detailed engineering and consultancy contract to the local Sofconfor the expansion of Yanbu industrial area. The five-year contract - which includes construction supervision - will cover infrastructure, utilities, telecommunications and related development over 400 hectares.
The proposed expansion is being carried out to serve as a base for new secondary industries planned at Yanbu. The project will be implemented in several phases, with Sofcon due to complete design work for the first major construction package by mid-2006. A contract is due to be awarded soon for the site preparations and roads package, which is being handled separately by RCJ&Y. The Yanbu project is the second major contract placed by RCJ&Y with Sofcon. A joint venture of Sofcon and the US' Stanley Consultants is already providing similar services for the phase 2 expansion of Jubail industrial park in the Eastern Province (MEED 3:10:03).
