
Oman's Sohar Aluminium new-generation smelter has been inaugurated. Construction of the $2.4bn AP36 smelter began at the end of 2005 and it produced its first hot metal in June, 2008. It reached full capacity on February 19 this year. The new smelter is a joint venture between Brazil's Rio Tinto Alcan (20%), Oman Oil Company (40%) and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (40%).
