Spain to donate $300 million to Iraq

17 October 2003
Madrid announced on 17 October that it is to offer an aid package to Iraq totalling $300 million over four years. The money will include $210 million in donations and the rest in loans or feasibility studies for reconstruction projects, Finance Minister Rodrigo Rato said after a cabinet meeting. Spain will officially offer the money at the 23-24 October donors' conference in Madrid. Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Aznar was quick to support the US-led coalition before the invasion of Iraq, and remains a strong ally of Washington and London.

To date, few countries have pledged sizeable sums for the reconstruction effort in Iraq. The US, UK, Japan and Spain have all announced their intentions to donate funds prior to the Madrid conference, and will between them donate more than half of the $36,000 million that the World Bank says is needed for the construction effort.
