A team of the local Dewan Architects & Engineersand the UK's AFLhas been selected as consultant for the redevelopment of Abu Dhabi's Al-Jazeera football stadium. The project calls for the reconstruction of the single-tier stands into a multi-tiered stadium in the same style as UK soccer stadia. The scheme will increase the ground's capacity to about 35,000 from about 20,000. The scope of works also comprises construction of two residential towers with about 17 storeys at one end of the stadium.

Work is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the inter-GCC soccer tournament in November 2006. The first phase of the estimated AED 200 million ($54 million) project entails demolition of the current stands. A tender is expected by the end of April with demolition scheduled to begin by mid-May. The project will be partly financed by First Gulf Bankalong with the government. The client is the Abu Dhabi Works Department.

The redevelopment of the main stadium follows the completion of a luxury grandstand for VIP visitors. France's Taillibertcarried out the designs. The local Al-Hamed Development & Constructionwas the main contractor.
