Suicide bomber hits Yemen Defence Ministry

05 December 2013

At least 20 killed in the most serious attack in more than a year

More than 20 people have been killed in a suicide bombing at Yemen’s Defence Ministry in Sanaa.

No group has claimed responsibility so far, but the Defence Ministry issued a statement saying the attackers “exploited some construction work” to carry out the attack where a car laden with explosive was driven into the ministry’s gates, Reuters news agency reports.

Some media reported other attackers were dressed in Yemeni army uniforms and opened fire with soldiers at the ministry, a tactic which has been used in previous attacks, particular by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQIP).
