Sultanate ups demand forecast

16 May 2003
The Ministry of Housing, Electricity & Water (MHEW) forecasts that an additional 1,000 MW of generating capacity will be required by 2015 to meet rising demand. Installed capacity presently stands at 2,494 MW, while peak demand is expected to rise over the next 12 years to 3,578 MW. Most of the sultanate's power requirements are fed from the northern grid, which accounts for 91 per cent of all the electricity generated in Oman.

Supply to the northern grid will be boosted when the 427-MW Barka and 285-MW Al-Kamil independent power plants (IPPs) are connected to the grid by the summer. Supplies to the Salalah grid were boosted in early May when the 242-MW generating plant of Dhofar Power Company, in which the US' PSEG Globalis the majority shareholder, came on stream (MEED 30:3:01).

Additional power will also become available once the proposed IPP in Sohar is commissioned in late 2005. A team of Societe Generalewith Germany's Fichtner, Denton Wilde Sapteand BankMuscat is advising the government on the project. The plant will have total capacity of 500 MW and be capable of producing 30 million gallons a day of desalinated water (MEED 21:3:03).
