Sustained attack in southern Iraq reported

20 March 2003
Reporters attached to US-led coalition forces in Kuwait say a sustained bombardment of Iraqi positions in southern Iraq had been launched in the evening of 20 March amid reports that a ground assault was getting under way from Kuwait.

Reports say heavy artillery and air attacks are taking place along the coalition lines and that units are moving forward into the demilitarised zone between Kuwait and Iraq. Reuters reported big explosions came from the direction of Basra and west of the city, the second largest in Iraq.
