12 September 2003

Bids for the $350m scheme must be submitted by 20 September

The Public Establishment of Electricity Generation & Transmission (PEEGT) has invited seven international consultants to bid by 20 September for the contract to evaluate bids for its estimated $350 million turnkey contract to design, construct and commission a new 750-MW combined cycle power plant in Deir Ali, south Damascus. Invited firms are Sweden’s SwedPower, MVV and Fichtner, both of Germany, Ireland’s ESB International (ESBI), the UK’s PB Power, Switzerland’s Colenco and Belgium’s Tractebel.

PEEGT is close to issuing tender documents for the turnkey contract. The project is expected to be part-financed by the government, with the remainder coming from international funding. The 750-MW plant will include two 250-MW gas turbines and a 250-MW steam turbine.

The project is expected to take about 30 months to complete. PEEGT is also preparing plans for a second 750-MW plant at Deir Ezor in the northeast. A tender is expected in late 2003 (MEED 22:8:03; 1:8:03).
