Three metro lines require $5.8bn in funding
Discussions between the Tehran municipality and Japanese, Chinese and European investors are ongoing for the provision of funding for three metro lines (8, 9 and 10) and two tramways in Iran.
Each of the planned metro lines will be about 30 kilometres. The total investment required for the lines could reach $5.8bn, or an estimated $65m per kilometre, inclusive of the cost of construction, rolling stock and systems.
The design for the metro/tramway lines and stations have been completed. Once funding is obtained, the government is looking at a three-year execution timeline.
The government said it hopes to finalise funding deals within the next 12 months. It is expected that contractors from the country providing the funding will be awarded the main deal for each line.
Three metro lines are currently operational in Tehran, while two more, lines 6 and 7, are currently under construction.
