Biography: Thamer Saud al-Sharhan joined the Power & Water Utility Company for Jubail & Yanbu (Marafiq) as CEO in 2006.
He started his career in 1983 with petrochemicals producer Petrokemya, a subsidiary of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), as a plant engineer, having graduated in applied chemical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in 1982. In 1994, Al-Sharhan joined Sabic on an assignment to review the port operations in the industrial city of Jubail.
In 1996, he was appointed to lead Sabic’s new port development project called Sabic Terminal Services, a joint venture between Sabic and Dutch port storage operator Vobak.
He was later appointed president of Saudi Petrochemical Company, a joint venture between Sabic and the UK/Dutch Shell Group, before moving to head Marafiq in 2006.
