Two mobile operators currently provide services for the Omani market

UAE-based Etisalat Group, Saudi Arabia’s Saudi Telecom Company and Kuwait’s Zain have submitted a bid for the third mobile licence in Oman.

Oman currently has two mobile telecoms operators - Omanmobile, a subsidiary of Oman Telecommunications (Omantel), and the Oman subsidiary of Qatar-based Ooredoo.

Formerly called Nawras, Ooredoo Oman was awarded the second mobile license in 2004.

All three publicly-listed firms said their bid is in line with their expansion strategy in the region.

Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (RTA) is expected to announce the qualified bidders for the mobile licence on 14 August.

TRA said introducing a third mobile operator will offer significant benefits to consumers to the economy in general.

The contract is expected to be awarded on 4 September.
