US President Donald Trump has announced a 10-day extension to the pause on military strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure. The decision, which delays potential strikes until 6 April, follows what Trump described as a diplomatic gesture from Tehran involving the movement of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.
The move offers a temporary reprieve for a global energy market that has been on edge since the conflict began nearly four weeks ago. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump suggested that despite conflicting reports, back-channel negotiations are yielding results:
“As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time. Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"
The extension follows an earlier briefing during a cabinet meeting at the White House, where Trump informed reporters that he had been sent a “present” by the Iranian authorities. He said 10 oil tankers were permitted to sail through the Strait of Hormuz. He added the move was intended to show that Iran’s intent in negotiations was “real and solid”.
Under normal conditions, about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the strait.
Oil prices cooled following the announcement. In morning trade in Asia, Brent crude was 1.2% lower at $106.76 a barrel.
