TURKEY: Europeans compete for steelworks power

Three European firms have quoted prices of between $15 million-16 million on the basic option for the construction of a power station for the Eregli Iron & Steelworks (Erdemir) on the Black Sea. They are Italy's Turbo Technica and Ansaldo, and Belgium's Unit International. Low bidder for an alternative option appears to be Turbo Technica.

Eleven bidders submitted prices, although some only tendered for the basic option. The tender brief called for a 30-MW basic option, and a 40-MW alternative for the gas-fired plant.

The plant will be used only by Erdemir for its operations. It will be fired by imported Siberian natural gas planned to reach the region in 1995 via a spur pipeline from the main trunk line running from the Bulgarian border up to Ankara.
